Woot!

posted by Bobaganush

I am feeling a little extra geeky today and thought that I would add to your vocabulary.  If you are ever looking for a word to express joy, and I mean joy found on the internet, then might I suggest that you begin to use the word woot.  Woot as defined in the dictionary is an expression of joy and yes, it was added to the dictionary in 2011 so it is even scrabble worthy.  First some definitions. Concise Oxford English Dictionary added woot and several others word sin 2011.  They say that woot is used to express elation, enthusiasm or triumph.  According to some online sources, woot may have orginally been spelled w00t (with zeros) or...

Arizona Renaissance Festival

posted by Bobaganush

Arizone Renaissance Festival 2012 Dates – Saturdays and Sundays February 11 – April 1 And Monday February 20 President’s Day! Including 12 stages of live shows, an outdoor circus, an arts and crafts fair, jousting and a day long feast, the Arizona Renaissance Festival (ARF) is one of the most amazing fairs of the year.  Starting in February ARF helps start the Ren Fair season.  Apache Junction, AZ transforms into a small medieval/renaissance village. Seeing as this fair is part of the Royal Faires family and the sister-faire of the Carolina Renaissance Festival you will see a lot of the same shows that you get to enjoy at...

Hey Nunnie Nunnie

posted by Bobaganush

Straight from the Sisterhood of the Wailing Soul comes Hey Nunnie Nunnie.  With their brand of irreverent humor and some of the best improvisational skills that you will ever see on the Ren Fair circuit they are becoming one of the premier acts working today.  The Silly Sisters love to...

Barely Balanced Acrobatic Show

posted by Bobaganush

I love tall people.  I love acrobats.  So, it is no surprise that I love the Barley BalancedAcrobatic Show!  When you are roaming around a Ren Fair and someone passes you, you tend to turn and look at them.  When you trun and you are staring at the knees of the person that passed you and they have a sign for a show… you follow the knees… sign. So I followed the knees to the Barely balanced show at the Georgia Ren Fest a few years agaoi and they are now one of the shows I stop at each and every year.  Starting from the three cast members coming in on stilts and the comedic removal thereof to the daring of juggling with fire...

The Kissing Wench

posted by Bobaganush

Not every fair has a Kissing Wench but I think that they should.  The Kissing Wench is one of the characters that roams the fair.  They are part of the scenery. They are part fo the flavor of the fair.  The Kissing Wench in the pictures provided with the article was at the Georgia...

Ode to a Ren Rat

posted by Bobaganush

The Ren Rat – this is a derogatory term that people ‘in’ the fair use for people that are ‘at’ the fair.  Thos poor souls that really want to be a part of the show.  That really want to stand out.  Those, dear reader, are the Ren Rats.  The ones that you see...

Hanlon-Lees Action Theater

posted by Bobaganush

Ride Fast, Hit Hard! I have seen Hanlon-Lees Action Theater at two fairs:  the Carolina Renaissance Festival and the Georgia Renaissance Festival.  They are the best.  Entertaining, talented, daring and just plain fun.  As a company they are Americas’s longest-running theatrical jousting company.  Wild West reenactment, fight choreography, film stunts and jousting are just the tip of the ice berg for this group.  They do outdoor stage combat and outdoor theater in settings all over the country but obviously in this article we are going to be focusing on their jousting shows. Hanlon-Lees shows are fun.  I know that is not a...

Carolina Renaissance Festival

posted by Bobaganush

Carolina Renaisance Festival The Carolina Renaissance Festival (CRF) is the sister faire of the Arizona Renaissance Festival.  We are blessed here int he southeast that they chose to make the beautiful city of Charlotte, NC the home of this fair and it is one of those annual stops for me.  The entertainment is second to none and the artisan marketplace will leave you speechless. Being one of the ‘big’ fairs in the US means that this fair is able to pull top-notch performers.  You have some of the greats of the Ren fair circuit calling the CRF home.  The Tortuga Twins are there for the full run of the show, Ded Bobkeeps the...

Highland Renaissance...

posted by Bobaganush

Each year near the small town of Eminence, KY you have the chance to step back in time and enjoy the Highland Renaissance Festival.  This is a relatively new fair (less then 10 years old) but that doesn’t mean that it is a small fair.  Plenty of entertainment and plenty of booths with...

Captain Jack’s Pirate Hats

posted by Bobaganush

When I decided to go in garb to my first Ren Fair (Carolina Renaissance Festival 2005) I was sporting the same hat that I wear to this day. It is a waxed and oiled, bifurcated tricorn, the style of which is called The MacKay.  Here is a pic: I love this hat.  Just in case you don’t understand:  I LOVE THIS HAT.  It was purchased from the premier pirate haberdashers on the world wide web, Captain Jack’s Pirate Hats.  The haberdasher himself is Jeff MacKay.  I can not say enough good things about this particular merchant.  here are few things that you need to know about Captain Jack’s Pirate Hats: You are not...
