Siege the Day Catapults

So have you ever been walking through a faire and all of a sudden you get hit in the head by a marshmallow?  Well if you have, you have been within firing range of Siege the Day!

Siege the Day Catapults builds handmade siege engines.  Catapults and trebuchet adorn their tables and beg for you to pick one up and buy it.  The height of desktop warfare, these siege engines are perfect!  Plus the folks that own Siege the Day – Kevin and Patty are just as much fun to talk to as their crafts are to play with.  I got to speak to them at the Highland Renaissance Faire in Eminence, KY and had a blast chatting with them for a few minutes.  They are one of those rare crafters that don’t mind you taking pictures and asking how their items are made.  But enough of that… let’s get down to their siege engines… their weapons of war… on a small scale but still… WEAPONS OF WAR!

Their catapults come in a number of sizes.  From hand held catapistols to tabletop models.  Their handheld line is still a favorite toy of my nephews.  They are easy to use and their ammunition, the marshmallow, is easy to find and if you hit somebody in the head, who cares.  The catapistol is amazingly accurate and with a little practice you can shoot a marshmallow into a 7 year old’s mouth from 10 feet away.  You can also scare the crap out of a cat if they don’t know they have become the target.  I am just glad that it was not my cat.

The item that interested me the most and that I will one day own is their tabletop trebuchet.  This piece of amazing, miniature, mechanical-mastery is one of those objects that you look at and say:  “Yes I will own you!”  Handmade.  All wood construction.  Pre-weighted so you don’t have to sit around putting shoot into it all day trying to get the right amount for the right fling.  And the best thing about a trebuchet is that they can stay cocked all the time.  They are always ready to repel that nosy co-worker or to deliver the coup de grace to your boss on your last day of work.  They will last forever.  And it is an example of the kind of craftsmanship that you don’t find outside of craftshows and ren faires.

They have a schedule of the faires they visit on the webiste so be sure to stop by their tent.  You will be hard pressed to meet a nicer set of people in the Ren World!
