Smoky Mountain Knife Works & The Knife Cave

The World’s Largest Knife Showplace

If you are ever in East TN and you need a place to go knock around and look at some great Renaissance stuff I have a suggestion:  Smoky Mountain Knife Works and their newest extension, The Knife Cave.

Now, if you get their catalog, you are thinking: they carry mostly pocket knives.  You are right and if you are a pocket knife enthusiast then they are certainly more of a destination then they are a stop.  But if you are into Ren Faires and that kind of thing they are certainly a destination and you will find some amazing things at their store that you might never see in their catalog.  Plus their store is all hands on.

When you go in the main entrance, you will be overwhelmed.  The top level is testosterone (knives and hunting) and the lower level is estrogen (great collection of kitchen equipment).  Somewhere in the middle, The Knife Cave.  In this area is everything they have that is fantasy related.  Swords, helmets, shields, foam and wooden weapons, everything.  They even have the World of Warcraft foam gear that has come out.  The Knife Works had a unique relationship to United Cutlery so they also still have the original Lord of the Rings replicas that came out.  Again, the best part is that they are hands on.  Most of the swords are on display.  They are not even behind glass so if you are of age (over 18 I think) you can just pick them up.  The good stuff is behind glass.  If you want to play with the Sword of Gondor you have to ask somebody.  But then again you still get to play with the Sword of Gondor so it is worth the time.  They also have lots of geek stuff.  From Wolverine claws to Captain America’s shield, there are lot’s of geek stuff to be seen and potentially purchased.  The Knife Cave area is rife with pop-culture references.  If you are into LARPing they have latex weapons but they also have boffer-style weapons.   These are great if you want to beat the tar out of each other and not leave a bruise.  They have helmets too.

I know, you are thinking:  Helmets, those aren’t geeky.  Step back into your childhood and play dressup.  The Knife Cave is a great place to outfit yourself with weapons for the next faire you are planning to attend.  And if you are looking for accessories, follow the stairs down to the lower level and look for the Relic Room.

On the lower level there is a section called the Relic Room, well I don’t know that it has an official title but that is what I call it.  The Relic Room has all manner of finds but if you are making your own accessories for a costume and need some odds and ends for jewelry and decoration this is the place to go.  Jade figurines, pieces of fossilized wood and shell… odds and ends.  They have beads by the strand.  They have all kinds of old stuff to poke through.  You see the,  Relic Rooms contains part of the collection and some of the artifacts that the owner of the Knife Works has collected over the years.  There are some really interesting pieces in this area so it is certainly worth browsing through but also keep in mind that there are great findings for putting those finishing touches on a costume.  I have used several of their jade pieces to finish part of the pirate outfit over the years and if I am at a loss I always take a trip down the road to the Knife Works (living here has its perks).

Come to East Tennessee!  Find I-40.  Go to exit 407 outside of Knoxville and head toward Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg.  4 miles from the interstate is a huge Blue roof building.  Under that blue roof is Smoky Mountain Knife Works.  Make a it a stop on your next trip to the Smokies.  Better yet make the Smokies a stop on your next trip to the Knife Works!
