Jas Townsend & Son
I decided to make this the Christmas post because I love to shop with these guys.
They aren’t exactly your typical Ren Faire merchant but their quality and value is out-of-sight! Jas Townsend is one of those niche catalog companies that everyone should buy from at least once so that you get your name on their mailing list and continue to get their catalog. Of course the bad part of being on their mailing list is that you are going to buy from them again and again and again. Their selection is frontier and colonial period by nature. If that is the time period that gets you going then they are certainly a one stop shop for costuming. If you are a Rennie… trust me they will help you flesh out the wardrobe and accessorize.
Their time periods are actually 1750-1840. Being a pirate I knew that they would have some crossover pieces. I was looking for something different in a pair of pants. I discovered their website through a Google search and remembered them from my Smoky Mountain Knife Works days. I started digging through their online selection and happened upon my new pants. Yes, boys and girls, I am a big believer in the sailor’s slops. They are comfortable in any weather, hot cold, with or without socks. They are accurate, as many sailors wore nothing but these on board ship. They were also known as petticoat trousers. I found a pattern and thought about making my own but once I found these online, the price point was right and they were mine. I wear them to almost every fair at this point.
Then I started looking at accessories. I found a stoneware pipe that I fell in love with. I found shoes. I found a little bit of everything on their website and their catalog is now an item that requires one or two reads when it arrives every few months. They are fast and easy to deal with and their quality is great. One thing about Jas Townsend that you may not realize is you can buy everything to setup camp from these folks. Pots and pans, including Dutch ovens are available. You can even buy the yard goods and patterns and make your own costume. There is very little you can’t find through this all-in-one catalog. I am buying the pipe soon. Even if I don’t smoke it, sticking through the button hole of my vest it will rock.
Also I was recently at Marble Springs (John Sevier’s home in Knoxville, TN) and they had brick tea. The gentleman doing the living history asked if anybody knew what t was. I picked it up, sniffed, felt the lack of weight and thought: “not only do I know what it is I know where it came from.” He said that it came from India, because he was staying in character but he gave me the knowing wink.
Anyway, give these guys a look. Here is their contact info:
