Blackbeard the Pirate: A Reappraisal of His Life and Times

Recently finished reading this book.  Blackbeard the Pirate:  A Reappraisal of His Life and Times by Robert E Lee focuses on the historic, event by event, life of Captain Edward Teach, the notorious Blackbeard.  Focusing on the time after he has already gone “on account” the history picks Blackbeard up as he is working for Hornigold and follows his story through the siege of South Carolina and to his death at the hands of Captain Maynard off the coast of Ocracoke, NC.

The way that the history is told makes for a very easy read.  The language is not overly historical, so anyone can pick it up without fear of being drowned in a lot of historiographical terms and concepts.  Due to the fact that Blackbeard worked off the coast of North America most of the time, the places and names are also relatively easy to follow and identify with, or at least find on a map.  The telling of the story of the siege of South Carolina’s Charleston Harbor may be the best version of the story both historically and for ease of read that I have ever had the opportunity to read.  It also is a great example of why Blackbeard is still one of the best known pirates during the Golden Age of Piracy.

Looking to improve your knowledge of pre-Revolutionary War history, or stock up on some good pirate tidbits, this is the book you need.  Blackbeard as innovator, Blackbeard as leader and Blackbeard the most frightening pirate of them all.  Come to be regaled by the tales of daring; stay to be scared by the boldness of his actions.  All in one book.
