Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

Went to see Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows on January 8th and I will have to say that it was equally as good as the first installment of this series, starring Robert Downey Jr.  I don’t usually do movie reviews on this site, or at least I haven’t until now, but most movies don’t fit the theme of the site.  let me try to convince you why this movie deserves its spot on the site.

First and most importantly, if you are a fan of the Steampunk / Victorian time period and you want a primer on costuming, you will find few movies that fit that bill as well as this Sherlock Holmes flick.  From military style dress garb to Sherlock’s own take on street wear and urban camouflage, every scene will give you something new to think about when it comes to costuming.  Throw into this mix, a gypsy camp and all the wild colors and odd clothing choices that you might find in a Victorian Gypsy camp, and you your eyes and mind will chase each other through every frame.

Secondly, te social occasions that the characters find themselves in range from walking the streets of London to attending an embassy ball in Switzerland.  Analyze the scenes and you will learn more to throw into your Steampunk characterizations then spending hours digging through books and magazines.  The embassy ball toward the end of the movie is fantastic.  The dancing and the pageantry really get your creative juices flowing.

Now the most important section – It is a GREAT movie.  The pacing is perfect.  It is beautiful.  Frame for frame it seems that every single pixel was designed to give the film a certain feel and flare.  Guy Ritchie does an excellent job of making what could just be an average action adventure movie something spectacular.  And the script is as well thought out as the staging and photography.  Parts of the movie that just seem like filler end up being pivitol moments in the movie.  And did I mention that the flick is pretty.  It is just gorgeous.

The costumes, the sets the whole package work to make a period piece with an edge and with enough visual effect eye-candy to keep even the most jaded geek happy from beginning to end.

If you liked the first Sherlock Holmes movie then you are going to like this one.  You may even find that you like this one a little better.  Check it out and see what you think.  Let me know.
