The Kissing Wench
Not every fair has a Kissing Wench but I think that they should. The Kissing Wench is one of the characters that roams the fair. They are part of the scenery. They are part fo the flavor of the fair. The Kissing Wench in the pictures provided with the article was at the Georgia Renaissance Festival. Let me set the scene.
We were sitting, resting a few feet from the where we had just watched the Ded Bob show. It was a hot day at the GRF. I wa snot in costume at this fair (I had not been converted yet). We were pooped. Up walks the Kissing Wench. She applied fresh lipstick. Kissed both myself and my paladin friend, SirWiz, on the cheek, took a tip from each of us and then departed. It was exactly what I needed to get me going again. We were re-energized. We were ready to take on the joust, the Washing Well Wenches and much more.
Now those of you that are not familiar with the concept of the Kissing Wench, let me fill you in. She is the wench that kisses people throughout the day leaving her mark where ever she goes. You can see the men in her wake due tot he fact that they all have the mark of the wench on their cheeks. They all bare a pair of perfect red lips, imprinted on their cheek for the rest of the day. Now I would not say that this kiss has any magical properties but I do knwo that at the end of the day when I was done, tired and completely through, this kiss from this wonderful lady got me back to my feet and back into the fair.
Thank you Kissing Wench – whoever you are.
