Port Washington’s scenic harbor gets invaded every year during the first full weekend in June.  The Port Washington Pirate Festival is the scene for invasion, merriment, mayhem and a whole lot of fun. This event, that sees thousands of people each year, has become one of the most anticipated events on the social calendar in that part of the country.

Like most good pirate festivals, they start with a parade.  The pirates come to town and following them are reenactors, bikers, boaters and many more.  Along with this parade they stage a good hearted invasion of the harbor.  Seeing this historic harbor invaded by pirates is a highlight for kids and adults alike.  The reenactors that come in add a piratical flavor to the comings and goings and also help to run the educational opportunities.  They also bring lots of historical demonstrations such as the firing of cannons that happen throughout the day.  You might even get a chance to see someone walk the plank.

Add to all the history a great marketplace full of crafts, arts and much more, food galore, fireworks at night, a little more food, lots of entertainment and … FOOD, and you have a faire like atmosphere that is going to make you wish this event covered more than one weekend.  The entertainment at this festival covers everything from music to comedy and everything in between:  street performers, jugglers, singing, dancing and everything to a pirate theme, of course.

And one last note – it is free.  Yes, gentle reader, you did read that correct.  Admission to the Port Washington Pirate Festival is FREE.  You will need to pay for your souvenirs of which there are many, your beverages which flow like water (lol) and of course for your food – which is diverse.  Make sure you are ready for the fun and that your bellies are empty when you come. Eat all you can, enjoy all the shows and remember that you are there to have fun.  Enjoy yourself, celebrate the piratey goodness of the day and enjoy time with family and friends.
